Hershel thinks of himself as a cross between Erma Bombeck and Lewis Grizzard, two of his idols in the field of writing. He notes that, "Both of them have published far more than I have. However, neither of them will ever publish again. I am not so constrained."

He taught at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels for over 20 years. As a computer auditor for Coopers & Lybrand (now Price-Waterhouse Coopers), Hershel worked on the financial audits of both large and small companies.
